citizenM – the pioneer of affordable luxury hotels – announces today the opening of its first property in Miami, citizenM Miami Brickell. Since its founding in 2008, citizenM has transformed the rules of traditional hospitality by introducing the concept of “affordable luxury for the people.”
To mark the brand’s arrival in Miami, citizenM partnered with Miami born-and-raised artist Jen Stark to create five bright and vibrant large scale pieces of artwork that unite to create one composition for the Brickell property facade. Located in the heart of the city’s bustling downtown at 11 SE 10th Street, the 252-room hotel with this conversation-sparking art installation bridges citizenM’s playful personality with Brickell’s cosmopolitan atmosphere. Inside, eight societyM meeting rooms offer style, tech, and unlimited coffee to let ideas flow. The hotel will also feature the brand’s first rooftop pool, offering sweeping views of Miami’s downtown for in-house guests.
“We’re thrilled to be opening the first of two citizenM hotels planned in Miami this year. With Jen Stark’s striking facade artwork and the interior curated with a selection of works from artists celebrating Miami’s diverse and vivacious spirit, we are excited to be able to provide guests with an unparalleled and culturally robust experience, making this property a landmark in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood.” — Robin Chadha, Chief Marketing Officer tells the Miami Guide.
As with all of its hotels, citizenM continues to bring art to the community through both commissioned and existing works. Commissioned artists Theresa Chromati and Lakwena Maciver created inspiring pieces for the citizenM Miami Brickell location. Chromati’s “Variations of Her Movements – Exploding and Exploring” shows an optimistic and hopeful journey — where she explores the act of unraveling your life, building yourself back up and moving forward to live in your full power. In the hotel’s entrance, Maciver’s kaleidoscopic colors, bold patterns and powerful message with “Good Life” provokes a deeper conversation. She explores how society showers certain people with money and glory and what this reflects about our values and beliefs. Thousands of citizenM guests will come face-to-face with these artists’ thought-provoking art.
Additionally, to give the property an art collection that felt distinct to Miami, citizenM hosted an “Open Art Call” where over 70 artists submitted works inspired by their love of the city. The panel of judges consisted of Rattan Chadha, founder of citizenM and contemporary art collector; Jen Stark, artist and creator of the hotel’s facade artwork; Rob Wagemans, Creative Director at citizenM and founder of Concrete; Lakwena Maciver, artist and creator of the hotel’s interior artwork; and FriendsWithYou, the art collaboration of Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III. Together, the judges selected ten winners to permanently showcase their pieces across the guest rooms of the new citizenM Miami Brickell and citizenM Miami World Center (opening late 2022). The ten chosen artists, many of whom are self-taught, created dynamic, colorful pieces adding a creative flair to the rooms.
citizenM Miami Brickell’s entrance leads into a non-traditional lobby styled living room that feels like home, furnished with plenty of books, art and furniture from citizenM’s long-standing partner, Vitra. In the heart of the living room is a canteenM, serving food and drinks 24/7. The property also boasts two terraces: one overlooking the bustling S. Miami Avenue and the other facing a lush green garden space. The citizenM guest rooms are uniform in style and size – optimized for relaxation with a wall-to-wall window, an enormous XL king-size bed topped with the finest European linens, a jetlag-bursting power shower, and an HD TV with streaming capabilities. Superfast free Wi-Fi is unlimited and perfect for streaming one’s own films or music straight to the TV. A MoodPad tablet controls the ambience – from temperature to blinds to entertainment. All of these features can also be controlled by a guest’s smartphone, thanks to the brand’s award-winning app
In March 2022, citizenM launched the world’s simplest hotel membership program: mycitizenM+. There are no points to collect, no bronze-silver-platinum levels to achieve, no stale club-lounge muffins, no silly welcome gift. Members simply sign up to enjoy ‘all the perks without the points’.
Guest feedback showed that most travelers want simplicity, value and flexibility. With the mycitizenM+ membership, citizenM guarantees a room – with an extra 10% discount off the lowest public rate – even during busy periods, for all member reservations made at least 48 hours in advance. Additional perks include: free late check-out and a free upgrade to a premium view room (both are subject to availability), a ‘first in queue’ chat service, early access to discounts, and members-only events. Superfast free Wi-Fi is available at all hotels – plus, guests can use the free citizenM app to check in, create a room key and much more.
The cost of the membership is recouped within two nights. Billing is monthly (not yearly) at a fixed low rate (only $12 / €10 / £9 a month), and sign-up is for one year. Every citizenM hotel is included, and there are no blackout dates.
The new citizenM Miami Brickell presents travelers with an affordable luxury experience—offering guests eye-catching art, high-tech design and frictionless service in a central location. Building upon the brand’s commitment to the United States, this opening will complement the existing citizenM US portfolio in Boston, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington DC, bringing the total offering to 9 hotels across the country and 27 worldwide. citizenM’s second property in the city – citizenM Miami World Center – is due to open later this year.
About citizenM
citizenM was launched in 2008 with a purpose – to disrupt the traditional, stale hotel industry. Rattan Chadha – the founder of the global fashion brand Mexx – was inspired by his employees to create a hotel for today’s frequent travelers, giving them everything they need and nothing they don’t. This means central locations in the world’s most exciting cities, but at an affordable price. Not just a place to sleep, but somewhere to work, relax and play – just like home. Somewhere with superfast free Wi-Fi, tech that makes life easy, and world-class art that isn’t ‘hotel art’. A room with an ultra-comfortable XL bed to crash in, and a powerful rain shower to wake-up in. Rattan Chadha called this ‘affordable luxury for the people’.
The first citizenM opened at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in 2008. In July 2022, citizenM’s portfolio includes 27 hotels in 17 exciting cities: London, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris, Copenhagen, Zurich, Geneva, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington DC, Taipei and Kuala Lumpur.
citizenM positioning
citizenM places in an ‘upscale hotel’ category (based on measurable factors like the STR Global Chain Scale positioning matrix, which ranks hotels based on price vs review scores) – thanks to an unfailing dedication to design, art, technology and comfort. citizenM stands out among all other hotels by simply creating a category of its own – as an affordable luxury hotel.
