PRE ART WEEK EVENTS

Saturday, November 25

Subway Car Unveiling at Wynwood Walls

Address: 2516 NW 2nd Avenue Miami, FL 33127

Hours: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

This 48.5ft x 9.5ft immersive “art piece” was originally in use throughout the Chicago-metro area, and has now found its permanent home after completing a 1,000 mile journey from West Virginia. Originally built between the years of 1976-1978 this Boeing-Vertol 2400 is 1 of only 200 built in its series. While most cars were scrapped after being in service for around 10 years, this one was used in anti-terrorism training exercises for the Center for National Response (Center for National Response – Wikipedia). Most decommissioned subway cars from New York City are now being dumped into the Atlantic Ocean to serve as artificial reefs off the East Coast, however many from the Chicago Transit Authority are finding a new life serving as functional gathering spots or preserved as artifacts at railway museums. When Jessica Goldman Srebnick, Curator of Wynwood Walls, discovered that many of these cars had been purchased and stored in the mountains of West Virginia, she set out on a mission over the course of many months to acquire one of these historic transport cars. With the aim to create an interactive artwork for visitors at the iconic Wynwood Walls, the subway car will feature one-of-a-kind murals on the exterior and curated artworks on the interior, where advertorial posters were once housed. This work is meant to delight, inspire, and spark curiosity for its future “passengers” in its new home at Wynwood Walls.
