Waymo has officially launched its fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Miami, marking a major expansion for the self-driving vehicle company and positioning the city as one of the first major metro areas in the Southeast to offer public robotaxi rides.
The service went live this week following months of testing and a growing waitlist of local riders. Miami now joins a short list of U.S. cities where Waymo operates a commercial driverless service, including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.
Residents can request a ride through the Waymo app, where a driverless vehicle arrives with no human behind the wheel. Riders unlock the car with their phone and are transported autonomously to their destination. During the initial rollout, Waymo’s service area covers key parts of Miami, with plans to expand geographically over time.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, said Miami’s complex driving environment—dense traffic, frequent construction, pedestrians, cyclists, and unpredictable weather—made it a strategic location for deployment. The company trained its system to handle the city’s unique conditions, including heavy rainstorms and intense sunlight.
According to Waymo, its autonomous technology has logged millions of miles across multiple cities and has demonstrated significantly lower rates of serious injury crashes compared to human drivers. The Miami launch follows a phased approach, beginning with invited riders before broader public access.
Local officials have framed the rollout as an opportunity to expand transportation options while closely monitoring safety and regulatory compliance. Waymo has stated it will continue working with city and county agencies as service scales.
