Superblue–Miami’s leading Experiential Art Company—is pleased to announce Lightfall, a new multisensory commission by creative duo Studio Lemercier, in collaboration with ambient electronic musician Murcof, which will debut on October 28, 2024.
Loosely evoking atmospheric phenomena, Lightfall invites visitors to surrender to the mesmerizing interaction of earth’s natural elements—air, water and light. Murcof’s ethereal compositions create an all-encompassing experience as guests, moving through the space, are immersed in the artwork’s sensorial qualities.
Plunged into darkness, the artwork is felt before it is seen: a curtain of transparent mist envelops visitors as ever-evolving abstract volumes of light come into view, momentarily suspended in the atomized particles of water. Seemingly still yet always in motion, Lightfall makes visitors simultaneously aware of the downward rush of water droplets caused by gravity and of the subtle turbulence of air
moving through the mist. Throughout the experience, Studio Lemercier constructs layers of movement, textures and sounds, using nature as a medium, rather than a subject.
Lightfall, designed specifically for Superblue, signifies an evolution of Studio Lemercier’s early focus on leveraging technology to create depictions of the natural world in their artworks. The Brussels-based studio, co-directed by artist Joanie Lemercier and curator Juliette Bibasse, works primarily with light in space, creating stage designs, projections and installations that escape from the traditional constraints of the video screen.
“We are thrilled to bring the incredible work of Studio Lemercier and Murcof to Superblue with the unveiling of Lightfall,” says Shantelle Rodriguez, Director of Experiential Art Centers at Superblue. “This installation questions perception, creating a fully immersive experience that encourages everyone to reimagine their relationship with nature.”
Over the past 10 years, Studio Lemercier has developed projects and collaborations with renowned institutions and creatives across the globe. In 2021, Superblue partnered with Torggler Fine Arts Center in Newport News, Virginia to curate Night Light, a group show featuring a digital mountainscape by the creative duo. Between 2021 and 2023, they toured a solo exhibition, Lightscapes, in Spain, Mexico, Peru and France. One of their signature public artworks, Constellations, has garnered international acclaim and was most recently on display in Australia following successful presentations in the UK, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Morocco, Norway and France. Throughout 2024, Studio Lemercier completed residencies focused on new projects around solar energy, low-tech artistic approaches and nature at the St. Andrews Botanic Garden, Scotland, and at La Becque in Switzerland.
“It is a great joy to be reaching such a wide audience in the context of Superblue Miami as we are both aiming at making high-quality art installations accessible to everyone,” says Studio Lemercier’s Juliette Bibasse.
Studio Lemercier joins teamLab, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, James Turrell, and Es Devlin in Superblue Miami’s ongoing exhibition Every Wall is a Door with a multisensory experience that further delves into human perception and our relationship to the natural world.
