Red Bull athlete Alex Sorgente is rolling out a new skateboarding event with the debut of Red Bull Concrete Heats, a head-to-head pump track race taking place at SkateBird Miami in El Portal, Florida on June 21st.
Created from Sorgente’s love of motocross and the anything-goes energy of head-to-head skateboarding races, Red Bull Concrete Heats introduces a new event format for skate fans and speed demons alike. The event will feature timed qualifying runs open to the public, with the fastest skaters advancing into a head-to-head knockout bracket to compete for the podium.
“It’s a rad park and facility to do this at because SkateBird is such a hub and has a full snake run set up right in the back,” said Sorgente. “I grew up in South Florida, so I wanted to do it for the community and put on an event that anybody can come out to, get their best time, and try to qualify for the main event. It being on Go Skate Day is just icing on the cake.”
Red Bull Concrete Heats builds on a racing spirit that has been part of skateboarding since its earliest days. Long before modern contests and global stages, skaters were racing through neighborhoods, hills and whatever else was in front of them. While slalom racing has its own specific place in skateboarding history, today’s park and street communities have increasingly embraced speed and time-based events.
Doors will open at 2:00 PM ET, giving riders time to register and get familiar with the course before qualifiers begin at 3:00 PM. During qualifying, skaters will take single timed runs, with the fastest riders seeded into a 16 or 32-person bracket depending on turnout. From there, two riders drop in at the same time, race through the course, and the faster skater advances.
In addition to the race, fellow Florida-born pros Zion Wright and Nikolai Pionbo will be in attendance to host a cash-for-tricks throwdown, with live music performances rounding out the Go Skate Day celebration.
The event also arrives as Sorgente looks to bring a looser, more accessible format to skateboarding during a high-pressure competitive window leading into the 2028 Summer Games. A Paris 2024 Men’s Park finalist, Sorgente is in the middle of another Olympic qualification cycle, but Red Bull Concrete Heats is meant to offer a different kind of outlet for skaters of all backgrounds.
