Jessica de Vreeze Honors Celia Cruz and Mothers’ Invisible Labor at Art Basel Miami

Jessica de Vreeze, Paris-born and Miami-based, presents a new augmented reality installation during Art Basel Miami that bridges art, technology, and women’s unseen labor. Her cantilevered sculptural shoe honoring Celia Cruz—created for the Miami Shoe Museum’s centennial challenge—earned her a finalist position and an Honorable Mention in the international Miami Vibe 2.0 competition.

Earlier this year, her photograph “Keep on Dancing” won the People’s Choice Award at the Coral Gables Museum and entered its permanent collection. Her 72″×72″ diptych “The Empress,”emblematic of Unchained Mothering, opened the International Women

Artists Exhibition in Doral. de Vreeze also received the Social Impact Award from The Art Estate Magazine in Beverly Hills.

Alongside her artistic practice, she leads Unchained Mothering, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to making women’s invisible work visible through art and community. What began as three portraits in New York has grown into a movement with public art installations, storytelling projects, workshops, and nationwide support.

On December 3, Unchained Mothering unveils “If You Would See — Parallel Worlds,” created with JC Fractal (Juan Carlos Gallo), founder of AR Miami IO. The installation will appear on the steps of the Convention Center during Art Basel Miami, revealing the parallel world of women’s unseen labor through augmented reality.

“If all women—and all mothers—knew their worth,” de Vreeze says, “society would transform at every level.”

Unchained Mothering recently completed its first Give Miami Day campaign and now enters Giving Tuesday with true grassroots momentum. Each contribution brings the organization closer to telling more women’s stories—stories that shape the world quietly yet powerfully.
