As it stands on the cusp of its 11th-year milestone, the swanky Miami dive bar is ushering in a new chapter, unveiling its biggest transformation to date with a complete re-design of its iconic indoor/outdoor terrace space. The visionary renovation has yielded a 3,000 sqft. sanctuary that marries the vibrancy of a 1970s Bohemian disco with the unpretentious cocktail bar spirit that defines Blackbird Ordinary.

Designed by Blackbird owner, Dan Binkiewicz himself, in collaboration with Deft Union, a distinguished Miami-based design and fabrication studio, the brilliantly re-imagined space features a brand-new integral built-in glass roof that towers over 30ft high. Cascading disco balls envelop the room with lush draped greenery and a boho-style mix of rustic wooden furnishings throughout.
Binkiewicz shares his inspiration behind the transformation, stating, “My foremost goal with the redesign of Blackbird was to preserve its vintage soul. Our aesthetic has always been a blend of vintage charm and glamour. I reflected back on my Miami Beach childhood where rattan and wicker were extremely popular, and I incorporated those elements into the redesign, fused with disco balls and lush greenery. Equally important was maintaining Blackbird’s fun and spirited heartbeat, so we undertook a complete overhaul of the sound system and light show. The aim was to offer a timeless old-school vibe with a fresh, new vibrancy; and I believe we’ve achieved just that.”
The dual entities of Blackbird Ordinary remain present and can noticeably be seen within the dark and moody interior cocktail bar and lounge space that resonates with the soul of your quintessential dive bar. Here, the bar lives at the center of the room and is surrounded by cozy booth seating and an intimate standing dance floor area that adjoins the corner pocket DJ booth. Brought in from the iconic Purdy Lounge, Blackbird’s new signature LED dancefloor embodies Purdy’s long-lived allure and seamlessly intertwines with Blackbird Ordinary’s true essence. In contrast, the newly renovated outdoor terrace reflects an entirely different persona within Blackbird, conveying more of an upscale dance club dive scene. This space boasts an expansive open-air setting that adopts a dynamic stadium-like layout with tables circling the room, 25 ft. – 35 ft. ceilings, and a sprawling dance floor at its center. With an ever-changing rotation of DJs and captivating entertainment, the terrace pulses with energy throughout the evening where guests can dance the night away while enjoying delicious hand-crafted cocktails or indulging in curated bottle service offerings.
A renewed cocktail menu adds to the venue’s revitalization, with signature cocktails that include ‘The Blackbird’ (sweet tea vodka, blackberries and lemonade); ‘Rump Shaker’ (rum blend, orange, pineapple, coconut syrup, dusted nutmeg); ‘New Edition’ (whiskey, coconut ice cube, house bitters); ‘Mass Appeal’ (mezcal, passion fruit, lime, agave, dash of spice, tajin rum); ‘Gin & Juice’ (gin, cucumber, ginger lemon, mint); and ‘Mona Lisa’ (reposado tequila, luxurado maraschino, aperol, lemon).
Programming at Blackbird is an ode to Miami’s home-grown nightlife, with live DJs and a variety of weekly/monthly entertainment offerings and pop-ups. The venue celebrates its patrons with specials including $150 discounted bottles before midnight every evening. Ongoing weekly themed nights include Tuesday’s Ladies Night Tuesdays – where ladies drink free from 10pm-1am – Thursdays Un Perreito Latin Night, and Sundays Lime Cay Reggae Night.
